Santo Domingo. – Despite his statement during the 2004 campaign that he would not pay government debts to suppliers if he wins the elections, opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejia’s repeated assertion has again roiled business groups.
Industries Association Federation (FAI) president Wadi Cano said the State has to assume its responsibility with debts “whomever wins” and must have continuity.
“Not paying it affects institutionalism and sends a negative signal to all creditors around the country,” the business leaders said, quoted by newspaper El Dia.
Moreover, Fernando Capellan, head of the medium companies grouped in Codopyme, said ex-president’s statement was were “misunderstood and interpreted.”
He said the opposition candidate referred to that fraudulent contracts or deceptive government purchases wouldn’t be paid if he wins the Presidency. “Those declarations have brought much unease within the sectors. We hope it’s not so but just a question of emotion of the moment and won’t materialize.”
