Slugger Guerrero’s “brawl” shines spotlight on Police actions

Baní, Dominican Republic.- The accusation of assault and battery in a brawl against ex Angels slugger Vladimir Guerrero and his later release without being charged has raised new questions into the conduct of National Police major Renato Peña, the alleged victim, after it was learned that the officer had been recently involved in similar incidents.

After meeting for several hours the Peravia province Office of the Prosecutor on Wednesday, Guerrero and Peña reached an “amicable agreement” over the Monday night brawl in a disco in the nearby town of Nizao.

Images taken during a recent bus drivers’ strike in Bani shows Peña threatening journalists, yelling profanity and even striking one of their video cameras.

The incident also brings to the fore the behavior of Police chief Jose A. Polanco regarding baseball stars.

Polanco, who had accused Guerrero of being the aggressor before the investigation, had been also criticized for having received in his office Baltimore Orioles pitcher Alfredo Simon, despite being declared a fugitive, in the murder of a man in his native town Luperon around two years ago.
