Dominican Republic presidential election starts 30-day countdown

Santo Domingo. – With just 30 days till the May 20 presidential elections its organization is more than 90% ready and lack only the details subject to legal terms, such as the printing of the ballots, which will be officially assigned today to the companies that won a call for tenders.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) said Thursday that it will start to assign the personnel that will work in the polling places and provide them with their credentials, publish the image of the official ballot in the major newspapers, the retrieval of materials from the electoral boards by the presidents and secretaries of the polling places, and the instruction of their personnel.

Deadlines

The JCE said these activities are subject to the terms in Electoral Law 275-97, which the officials of the JCE and electoral boards must enforce.

According to the electoral calendar, the terms start Saturday, May 5, the deadline to assign the personnel to work in the 14,470 polling places nationwide and some cities abroad. One week later, on Saturday, May 12, is the limit date to provide the personnel’s credentials.

On Tuesday, May 15, the JCE will have to publish the ballot’s image in a national newspaper; on May 16 the presidents and secretaries of the polling places start retrieving the electoral material from the electoral boards, an concludes Friday, May 18.
