European Union hails presidential election

Santo Domingo. – The European Union (UE) on Tuesday hailed the staging of a "peaceful" and "orderly" presidential election in Dominican Republic and congratulated the winner, ruling party candidate Danilo Medina, said chief diplomat Catherine Ashton in Brussels, reported by Efe.

“The chief representative has taken note of the result of the presidential elections in the Dominican Republic, in which the Dominican people have expressed its will in a peaceful and orderly manner in the voting on May 20," said Ashton spokesman Michael Mann in a statement.

Ashton praised the country’s authorities for organizing the elections, though regrets incidents which marked the polling, including an argument which led to a fatal shooting in the city of Puerto Plata (north) Monday morning.
