See the provinces with the lowest average salaries in the country

Santo Domingo, DR.

Independencia, Pedernales, San José de Ocoa, Elías Piña, and Bahoruco are the five provinces with the fewest active formal workers, which economists classify as having the least participation labor market and the localities with the lowest average salaries in the country.

According to statistics from the Social Security Treasury (TSS), as of April of this year, Independencia province, located on the border with Haiti and commonly known as Jimaní, registered 587 active workers with an average salary RD$12,100.1.

Pedernales, also a border province, had 1,020 active employees with an average salary of RD$12,865.2. It is followed by San José de Ocoa, with 1,454 active workers and an average wage of RD$12,802.3.

In Elías Piña, there are 1,989 people with formal jobs or active workers with average salaries of RD$12,619.2. Bahoruco province, which includes Neiba, Duvergé, La Descubierta, and Tamayo, has 1,741 active workers with an average salary of RD$16,290.5.

The TSS does not count in the provinces employers with branches or offices at the national level, so only jobs in local companies are counted here, and employment offered by banks, telecommunications companies, commercial chains, and government jobs are not registered.

In contrast, the provinces with the highest participation in employment are the National District, which accumulates 50.37% of them, with 1,071,714 formal workers and an average salary of RD$36,469.5.

The province of Santo Domingo has 13.94% of the jobs registered by the TSS, with 296,582 active workers and an average salary of RD$22,098.4. It is followed by Santiago de los Caballeros, with a 12.48% share of employment, 265,559 workers, and a salary of RD$19,776.7.

The average salary is the sum of all wages divided by the number of registered active workers.

As of April, the TSS registered 2,000,040 workers and a national average salary of RD$28,107.4.
