SANTIAGO.- For the second time this year dozens of people including representatives of community organizations from Santiago’s southern outskirts on Tuesday staged a demonstration to protest the presence of undocumented Haitians in the city.
The protesters began their walk in the sectors San Jose and La Mina and concluded in the Olympic Village, where the chanted slogans demanding the expulsion of the foreigners.
The spokesman for the residents of San Jose and La Mina, Francisco Consuegra, called on president elect Danilo Medina, and the chief of police to control the illegal presence of Haitians in the city.
He said many of the assaults, burglaries and other crimes that take place in the south of Santiago involve undocumented Haitians.
The rally was also attended community representatives from the sectors Matanzas, Yapur Dumit, Primaveral, Arroyo Hondo Arriba, and Abajo, and Pekin.
Consuegra said they’ve been forced to create community brigades to deal with the wave of thefts and holdups he affirms are committed by those foreigners.
The community leader added that most creeks are polluted because they are occupied by Haitian families who build their shacks along their banks.
