Senators reject lower Chambers’ changes to government wage bill

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Senate yesterday rejected the Chamber of Deputies’ amendments to the bill to regulate government wages, which would’ve ratified some of the benefits, incentives and privileges now enjoyed by members of Congress.

The 26 senators in yesterday’s session voted unanimously to reject the changes to the original piece.

On Tuesday, the Deputies amended Article 26 of the original bill approved by the Senate, and ratified that the Congress is governed by its own rules, which drew wide rebuke from sectors of society that regarded the deputies as legislating for their own benefits.

The decision will send the bill back to the Chamber of Deputies for debates.

And as some senators reacted euphorically to the rejection, Senate president Reynaldo Pared reminded the members of Congress of “unwise” value judgments which can lead to a clash between the two legislative chambers.
