Danilo Medina sworn in as president of the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Senate president ReinladoPared Pérez has handed the ceremonial sash to the new president of theDominican Republic, Danilo Medina after swearing him in as president.

The handover of power, which took place at 11:03this morning was applauded by all present.

Pared Pérez then swore in new vice presidentMargarita Cedeño de Fernández.

Reinaldo Pared Pérez said that the late professor Juan Bosch would have been proud that two of his disciples, president Leonel Fernández and Danilo Medina have exchanged the presidential sash.

Pared Pérez described the achievements of the Fernández presidency as unprecedented and highlighted the president’s high popularity rating he said was confirmed by a recent Asisa poll at 70%.

He praised Danilo Medina’s qualities, saying he was sensible, discreet and trustworthy, and added that he would fulfill his electoral campaign promises.
