Dominican Republic shutters airports on T.S. Isaac

Santo Domingo.- All airport operations in the country will be suspended starting 12 midnight to 6am Friday, said Dominican Civil Aviation Institute director Alejandro Herrera.

He said the airports closings form part of the safety measures taken on Tropical Storm Isaac’s imminent passing south of the national territory.

In Las Americas Airport (AILA) security personnel were placed on permanent alert as the storm which prompted warnings is now less than 500 kilometers southeast of the Dominican capital, precisely near that terminal, the country’s busiest.

The latest National Meteorology Office (ONAMET) said as of 1pm Tropical Storm Isaac was 395 kilometers southeast of Saona Island, on the country’s extreme southeast.

Flights

Most flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico to the Lesser Antilles and Dominican Republic were canceled, while those of Jet Blue are reportedly on schedule.

American Eagle operations manager in San Juan, Susana Castro said the airline resumed its flights to the nearby Caribbean islands.
