Colleague must come clean on drug allegation: Ex president

Santo Domingo.- With allegations of links to drug traffickers still pending over his head, former president Hipolito Mejia on Monday said opposition PRD party president Miguel Vargas must clarify over statements by money laundering convict Sobeida Felix, that the latter received money from her lover, the Puerto Rican Jose Figueroa Agosto.

Mejia, also a member of the PRD, rejected notions that candidates are unaware of the sources of money received, referring to Vargas’ denial of having links with Figueroa.

"I have never had dealings or ties with Mr. Figueroa Agosto, a name which then hadn’t been identified by authorities in illegal activities," Vargas said Sunday in a media statement.

Hungry PRD

Mejía said the only medicine that cures the PRD of its "disease" is to hold a convention to elect its leaders, adding that the party’s rank and file is hungry to head toward a new direction.
