Ruling could split Dominican Republic’s opposition party

Santo Domingo.- Thursday afternoon’s Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) ruling allowing a disciplinary hearing against ex president Hipolito Mejia paves the way for the definitive split of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party PRD, headed by his internal opponent, Miguel Vargas

The TSE ruled against the appeal filed by Mejia’s sympathizers who sought to halt an official notification to appear before the PRD’s Disciplinary Committee on Friday.

In addition to Mejia, the justices’ ruling also paves the way for the expulsion general secretary Orlando Jorge; organization secretary Geanilda Vasquez, and acting president Andres Bautista.

During the hearing held under tight security with antiriot police placed around the court located at the Centro de los Heroes (La Feria), the TSE ruled that the citation of Mejia and PRD colleagues was conducted properly and didn’t infringe their rights.
