Agents nab American who tried to smuggle guns through airport

Santo Domingo.- Las Americas Airport Customs agents on Wednesday seized three firearms and military gear from a U.S. citizen who tried to smuggle them into the country, from New York city.

The authorities identified the suspect as Carmine Emmanuel Coppola, 24, who lives in the town Salinas, Bani (south).

Coppola brought the weapons hidden in a false bottom suitcase covered with clothes and other personal items, the authorities said, and include a Glock 40 mm pistol, a 12 gauge shotgun and a Mossberg 22 rifle, all with extra magazines and ammo.

The Customs preliminary report said the foreigner tried to bribe several Customs employees after they detected the weapons inside the luggage.
