Trinidad and Tobago condemns Dominican court decision

Santo Domingo.– The People’s National Movement (PNM) of Trinidad and Tobago has joined the many international voices condemning the recent court decision to strip the citizenship of thousands of people of Hatian descent in the Dominican Republic, effectively leaving them without a nationality.

The PNM expresses its condemnation of the recent outrageous decision of the Dominican Republic, where steps have been taken to revoke the citizenship of Haitian nationals who were born in the country, as well as recent immigrants to that country over the last 85 years.

"According to the international press, this high court decision is to have retroactive effect, resulting therefore in the abandonment of affected Haitians to the unfortunate category of stateless persons," PNM political leader Dr. Keith Rowley said in a statement Friday.

Rowley said he firmly believed the condemnation of this unprecedented and inhumane action by Dominican Republic’s courts should meet with the overwhelming support and endorsement of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
