Agents seize 10 tons of smuggled conch headed to China

Santo Domingo.- Officials on Wednesday seized 9,000 kilos (20,000 pounds) of conch in 223 boxes at Caucedo Multimodal Port, allegedly exported by the seafood company Día a Día Marisco Trading SRL, headed to China.

Environment prosecutor Andrés Chalas said Ministry and Dominican Fisheries and Aquaculture Council (CODOPESCA) officials confiscated the conch, accompanied by National Police agents.

He said the conch was seized on a search warrant issued by Santo Domingo Permanent attention Court judge Josefina Ubiera, and noted that the smugglers face a fine as high as 200 minimum salaries and prison terms as long as 10 years.
