Dominican Republic defends controversial ruling as sovereign measure

Santo Domingo.- The National Immigration Council meets today to hear the proposals made to the Government on the National Plan to Regulate Foreigners, ordered by the Constitutional Court’s controversial ruling on nationality.

The meeting also coincides with a diplomatic offensive for the ruling, including two visits by a Dominican delegation to Venezuela to explain the its scope.

The meeting comes as several leaders of Caribbean Community (Caricom) nations press to exclude Santo Domingo from the block, accusing Dominican Republic of "denationalizing" thousands of offspring of Haitians.

A meeting of Caricom in Port-au-Prince was cancelled on claims of Haiti’s instability.

Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have spearheaded the psh to punish Dominican Republic, including the Petrocaribe oil deal.

Meanwhile Dominican Government officials and diplomas defend the ruling’s sovereignty in Venezuela, United States, United Nations and the Organization of American States.
