Migration: “If there was a macuteo before, it’s over”

Alcántara reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to deporting all foreign nationals who are present in the country illegally while at all times upholding each individual’s human rights. “We have always respected the rights of foreign citizens,” he said. “When we started working at the General Directorate of Immigration, our goal was to comply with the law.”

In this regard, he said that since the detainees spend a day in the intervention centers being processed before being transported the following day to their country of origin, they are given the appropriate breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at the time of carrying out the operations and transferring the detainees there. Alcántara mentioned that the General Directorate of Migration’s work has recently been strengthened, resulting in up to a thousand deportations per day when approached by journalists at an event held in Barahona.

He said that in the month of July, 9,000 foreign nationals who had overstayed their visas had been deported; by the end of August, that number had risen to 9,500; by the end of September, it had risen to 9,900; and by the end of October, 15,500 deported illegal aliens had been registered.
