Four deputies from different political parties support President Luis Abinader when he considers “unacceptable and irresponsible” the declarations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, requesting the Dominican Republic and other countries of the region, to “stop the deportation of Haitians to their country of origin.”
Deputy Juan Dionicio Rodriguez of the Frente Amplio party accused businessmen, police, and government officials of allowing undocumented Haitian immigrants to enter the country by establishing “an organized gang that charges up to 20,000 pesos for trafficking each undocumented person into Dominican territory.”
The deputy of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Gustavo Sanchez, supported the president. He said that the president did what corresponds to a statesman of the Dominican Republic”. “If he did not do so, he would hurt Dominican feelings, who understand that we have done too much for the Haitian people already.”
The deputy of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), Máximo Castro, described President Abinader’s position as courageous.
The deputy of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Ramon Ceballos, believes that the United States can take the Haitians to its territory to help them.
