Opposition party crisis languishes as factions return to Electoral Court

Santo Domingo.. – The faction of Dominican Republic’s opposition party (PRD) headed by former president Hipolito Mejia on Friday challenged the Superior Electoral Court’s (TSE) jurisdiction to rule on the cease and desist order requested by party president Miguel Vargas, who seeks the hand over of the organization’s National Headquarters from the Interior and Police Ministry.

The former president’s lawyers asked the high court to desist from hearing the case, claiming that it’s the jurisdiction of the Supreme Administrative Court.

They also requested the handover of the offices to the PRD Executive Committee, so that all party authorities have access and control.

Mejia’s appeal was submitted by PRD interim president Andres Bautista, general secretary Orlando Jorge, and organization secretary Geanilda Vasquez, whose expulsions unleashed the current crisis. Mejia had also been expelled.
