During an interview on the Hoy Mismo program on Wednesday, Hipólito Mejia, the former President of the Dominican Republic (2000-2004), declared that Haiti is a “jungle” rather than a country. Mejia made this statement after being consulted by journalist Luis Mejia Oviedo about the nation’s sociopolitical crisis. Similarly, he mentioned the Dominican Republic’s Haitian history, emphasizing that “you have to understand it.”

Furthermore, he named the countries that bear “responsibility” for Haiti: “the United States, Canada, France, and a portion of the Haitians who have believed that this (the country) is a farm to spur it on.” In light of this, he stated that he has “privileged information” about the situation in that country. Concerning Haitian migration in the Dominican Republic, he stated that without “Haitians,” there would be no construction, tobacco, tomato, or banana harvests.

“Haitians charge the same as Dominicans,” the former president added.
