Top negotiator hails ex president’s decision to step aside

Santo Domingo.- Monsignor Agripino Nuñez said yesterday’s announcement that former president Hipolito Mejia would be willing to step aside to prompt the start of reconciliation talks in the opposition party (PRD) paves the way to resolve its internal conflict.

He said Mejia’s decision and of other senior party leaders a good step to sit "with a cool head and a willingness to see the good of the party," which prompted the former president’s response as the best way "and not be inventing any more."

Mejia said he agrees with the decision, and affirmed that it also serves to show that he’s acting in good faith.

Nuñez, who directs the Presidential Dialogue Commission and heads the Pontifical Catholic University (PUCMM), added that the unity in an important party like the PRD is needed "for the balance of coexistence and good for democracy."
