Notorious Dominican lawmaker heads protest against Barrick Gold

Santo Domingo.- Hundreds of people including a notorious Deputy are marching Wednesday to protest against Canadian miner Barrick Gold, demanding a revision of the contract to exploit the Pueblo Viejo site, or leave the country .

Among the protest’s leaders figures the deputy John Hubieres, whose association of bus owners (Fenatrano) stages frequent violent strikes that have claimed the lives of several people, including passengers.

set off from La Lira Park on Lincoln Av., toward the Canadian embassy in the Acropolis tower, both located in the upscale sector, Piantini.

The protesters have blocked traffic at the busy intersection, with hundreds of vehicles backed up from Churchill Av.

In addition to Hubieres, , the political activist Virtues Alvarez and leftist leader Fidel Santana spearhead the protest, and entered the embassy offices to deliver a document titled “Dominican Republic legitimately owns the gold being exploited."

"Barrick get out," "Barrick must leave", "Shut off Barrick" and "Gold is our oil," are some of the slogans that the protesters’ banners bear.
