Santo Domingo.- Several civil society groups gathered at Independencia Park on Sunday to demand that president Danilo Medina revoke the special power issued to a commission to disburse 45% of proceeds to the alleged owners from the sale of land around the pristine beach of Bahia de las Aguilas (southwest).
They believe that that the power issued to the commissioners Cesar Pina, Francisco Javier García and Bautista Rojas is illegitimate and jeopardize the country’s interests, because it violates the Constitution.
Among those attending the vigil were representatives of the Tax Justice Movement, the Dominican Anticorruption Alliance.
They said they don’t oppose the South region’s development through projects related to Bahia de las Aguilas, but disagree as to how the government gave some of the land to corrupt officials, business owners and others who don’t even exist.
Adocco coordinator Julio Cesar de la Rosa said that faced with the lack of response from a request for a cease-and-desist order, they’ll appeal to international courts.
