Court orders new trial for Canadian case

Montreal, Canada.– A new trial has been ordered for the men accused in the 2011 death of Canadian Jordan Morrison, 19. The Morrison family was vacationing together in February 2011 at a Punta Cana resort when Jordan stayed out late to go to the resort’s dance club.

According to simcoe.com, a fight broke out at the club and Jordan was soon rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Last May, a Dominican judge handed down a 10-year jail sentence to Montreal’s Dymtro Yev for first-degree murder.

The online website reports that Yev is serving jail time in the Dominican Republic, but has appealed the judge’s decision. Another Montreal man, Bouzid Redha, was acquitted of the first-degree murder charge.

Carrie McGinnis, Jordan’s mother, said she is upset because if Yev had been convicted of the same crime in Canada, he would automatically get life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.

She and husband Dale Morrison have made several flights back to the Caribbean country to fight their son’s death in court. But this time, they didn’t make the trip.

"The decision has just been told to us by our translator in the Dominican Republic, that the court has ordered a new trial to be held in San Pedro with three judges," wrote McGinnis on the Justice for Jordan Patrick Morrison page on Facebook.
