Las Terrenas City Hall audited by the government’s accounting office

Las Terrenas, Dom. Rep. – The Government Accounts Agency (CC) has recently completed and published a financial audit of Las Terrenas 2010 budget execution. The 96-page report encompasses only the period from 1 January to 31 December of that year founding multiple irregularities in the execution of payments, public works and general use of the municipal budget.

In its conclusions the report notes: “…this reports presents in detail the important weaknesses and deficiencies in the internal control of this entity. The lack of a single and shared accounting system impedes the availability to trusted financial information and an effective procedure control. Similarly, the institution’s lack of application of the legal dispositions related to the purchasing of assets or goods and the Tax code affects the compliance of the key objectives for this control.”

The report goes on to add: “…there are capital deficiencies in its petty and bank cash, income, transportation equipment, furniture and office equipment, accounts payable, and disbursements without justification of payments.”

The audit by the CC was carried out at the request of members of the Las Terrenas community who had continuously expressed their discontent with the condition of the municipality affairs and the suspicious of foul play with reference to the use of the municipality’s budget as applied to the town and population needs.

“Las Terrenas is committed to a change for the improvement of its community and town, and for this reason we have organized a peaceful demonstration in front of city hall next Friday at 5:00 p.m. in order to express our discontent with the situation and demand the removal from office of current city mayor Mr. José Mercedes Martínez Emeterio,” comments Mr. Delvis Santos, journalist and host of the popular radio program “Al Día Con Delvis Santos.”
