Holiday death toll reaches 13

Santo Domingo.- The number of deaths attributed to the 2011-2012 holiday period increased to 13, Emergency Operations Center (COE) director Juan Manuel Méndez announced Sunday.

He said of the 295 people affected, 23 were by alcoholic overdose, including four minors and 11 others by food poisoning.

Vehicles

In the joint press conference, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) revealed it impounded 573 vehicles.

Méndez said motorcycles were involved in 97of the 183 traffic accidents reported.

Of the total involved in traffic accidents there were 12 collisions, resulting in two deaths. Motorcycle accidents caused injuries to 120 people, and 121 involving other vehicles.

Méndez added that compared with the same period last year, there were 58 percent fewer deaths.
