Santo Domingo.- The Public Works Ministry on Wednesday said the work to rebuild the Malecon Promenade (30 de Mayo highway) is 70 percent completed, with 2.5 kilometers already finished and expects to inaugurate it in the coming weeks.
The 4-kilometer stretch starts at Lincoln Av. and features a 6-meter wide sculptured sidewalk, 250 cross drainage culverts designed to prevent clogging during downpours or hurricanes.
It also features retaining walls to protect the coastline from erosion, while 400 of the 740 planned concrete benches have already been installed, in addition to 328 street lamps.
Rigoberto Alcantara, project director of the contractor Malespin, said the work is 80 percent complete in the stretch between San Juan Bautista and Luperon streets "The nature of this project allows for sufficient lighting to provide security to visitors, the construction of sidewalks and benches is complete and streetlights were placed at the Centro de los Heroes.”
He said aside from the embellishment, cleanliness and lighting, “this is going to allow the people of Santo Domingo to recover their confidence to freely and safely walk along the Malecon and will also have a big commercial impact."
