Public Health downplays dengue outbreaks

Santo Domingo.- Despite the Public Health Ministry’s downplaying on Wednesday of the dengue outbreaks across the country with more than 3,538 cases as of 15 September, the Deputy Minister Rafael Schiffino’s epidemiological report cautions on the need to take prevention measures.

Of the 3,538 cases, 67% were confirmed as dengue with 90 serious or hemorrhaging and 10 deaths.

Meanwhile 23 provinces are within epidemic area with active circulation of the virus caused by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, as public hospitals continue to attend patients with the disease, mostly children and teenagers.

Yesterday morning the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital had 23 minors under treatment, mostly from neighborhoods of Greater Santo Domingo, in addition to some from Barahona, San Cristóbal and Villa Altagracia provinces.
