Catholic Church wants to halt mining in “foreign hands”

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s catholic bishops on Tuesday said the Catholic Church supports peaceful actions aimed at halting mining at Loma Miranda (central) and to keep the natural resources out of foreign hands.

In a press conference, La Vega bishop Antonio Camilo, who heads the Episcopal Conference Environment Committee, called on society groups and other religions to join in supporting firm actions he affirms will be carried out to protect and prevent Loma Miranda’s destruction by foreigners.

"In this message we invite you to reflect on the environmental issues that threaten the inhabitants of Monseñor Noel, Sanchez Ramirez and La Vega provinces and the pollution Barrick Gold has been causing," the prelate said, accompanied by several priests.
