Santo Domingo.– Among the 47 countries classified by the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) in the Medium Human Development category, the Dominican Republic is among the six nations with the lowest safety perception.
Only 38% of the population say they feel and 15% say they have confidence in people.
The "Human Development Report 2013," released last week, states that the other five countries with the lowest perception of safety are Botswana (31%), Namibia (33%), South Africa (38%) and Gabon (39%), all in Africa, and Paraguay (38%) in South America.
These percentages were obtained from the ones who answered "yes" to the question from the Gallup World Poll "Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?".
Compared to the 47 countries with medium human development, the Dominican Republic is the country with the highest murder rate, but ranks sixth with the country with more cases.
With 25 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants, the Dominican Republic has less cases than South Africa (31.8), Guatemala (38.5), Belize (41.4), El Salvador (69.2) and Honduras (91.6).
