Measure favors past Dominican president spurs protests

Santo Domingo.- Members of the Al-Pais party and the movement La Multitude staged peaceful protests at the National District Office of the Prosecutor late Monday, against the decision to refuse the charges of corruption filed against former president Leonel Fernandez.

The protesters gathered in front of the Ciudad Nueva courthouse where they waved pickets and chanted slogans rebuking prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso’s decision.

"Prosecutor, carry out your mission, pull out the cuffs and jail Leonel," chanted the protesters, who also carried pickets with pictures of former officials and some lawmakers of Dominican Republic’s ruling party, PLD.

Some of the protesters said they hope Reynoso reverts her decision and investigates the charges filed by Al-Pais president Guillermo Moreno.

Several police agents were deployed in front of the courthouse to contain the protests.
