Hundreds march to Congress against higher taxes

Santo Domingo. – While the Chamber of Deputies debates the tax package submitted by the Presidency in late October, outside antiriot police ready for the arrival of protesters carrying banners and chanting against the legislation they affirm will increase the cost of living.

Despite the lack of support by the powerful transport sector, hundreds of people gathered to march toward Congress against the proposed tax reform.

The walk began early Tuesday morning at the Santo Domingo State University (UASD) and aims to reach the Congress via Correa y Cidrón Street.

In a surprising move, several owners of famous bars and restaurants showed up to support the protest.

One of then, a foreigner, said if the deputies approve the proposed elimination of the obligatory 10% tip in hotels, restaurant and bars, he would close his hotel and leave the country. “My employees depend on that tip, I know some owners of bars and restaurants steal that money from their workers, but mine depend on it and I make sure they get it.”
