Former President wins a court round on alleged embezzlement

Santo Domingo.- The National District 1st Instruction Court ruled Thursday for National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso’s refusal to proceed against former president Leonel Fernandez on charges of embezzlement filed by Alianza País party president Guillermo Moreno.

Judge Roman Berroa rejected that Moreno’s allegations against Fernandez constitute criminal actions and corruption, relating to the former president’s ?think tank, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).

He also dismissed the money laundering charges against the former president, agreeing with Reynoso’s decision, rejecting that Fernandez had used his position to Funglode’s benefit.

Later on Friday, Moreno vowed to appeal the ruling.
