Dominican government will start a national reforestation day on June 10

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña led the thirtieth Council of Ministers and Directors meeting at the National Palace. During the meeting, it was announced that the Ministry of the Environment, with the support of all government institutions, will organize a National Reforestation Day. Over the next two years, 320,000 hectares of land will be planted.

The National Reforestation Day is scheduled to begin on June 10 and will take place over three consecutive weekends. It will focus on the main hydrographic basins of the country, such as the Yuna, Nizao, Yaque del Norte, and Yaque del Sur Rivers, and the tributaries that irrigate Greater Santo Domingo.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the topics of citizen security and an overview of the Dominican economy. The information was shared by José Ignacio Paliza, the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, following the meeting.

Paliza highlighted the government’s commitment to recovering the environment, particularly in relation to the country’s main hydrographic basins. He emphasized that the Ministry of the Environment’s planning will be supported by all government ministries. The National Reforestation Day aims to foster enthusiasm among society, civil society organizations, business entities, schools, and others, and to promote a cultural shift and a new vision regarding environmental preservation.

Citizen security was another important topic discussed during the meeting. The results achieved through the government’s efforts in this area were evaluated. The meeting underscored the significance of the Ministry of Interior and Police’s program, “Back to the Neighborhood,” which promotes community engagement.

Paliza announced that the next “Back to the Neighborhood” event will take place in Santiago and will feature personalities from the city. He emphasized the importance of the event, highlighting that many outstanding citizens, professionals, athletes, and role models have emerged from neighborhoods. The event aims to inspire neighborhoods to take pride in these examples and encourages a change in culture and perception of the role of social actors in their communities.

While acknowledging that citizen security remains a concern, Paliza assured that the Dominican government is committed to improving safety for all citizens. Efforts have been made to reform the police and enhance citizen security, although the results may take time to materialize fully.

The Administrative Minister of the Presidency reiterated the government’s dedication to ongoing improvements and ensuring that the country sees the positive impact of these efforts gradually.
