Orlando Jorge Villegas: “The Dominican Republic is greatly affected by the gases emitted by other countries”

Santo Domingo.- Deputy Orlando Jorge Villegas emphasized that while the Dominican Republic has low greenhouse gas emissions, it is disproportionately affected by emissions from other countries. Despite being among the lowest emitters, the country experiences significant impacts due to the gases emitted globally.

According to Villegas, this vulnerability is attributed to the country’s geographical conditions, which make it susceptible to the effects of climate change. He highlighted that the Dominican Republic’s emissions account for less than one percent of the total global greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the importance of implementing effective public policies to address climate change.

During an interview on El Gobierno de la Mañana, broadcasted from the XXVIII extraordinary meeting of the Forum of Presidents of the Legislative Powers of Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean Basin (Foprel), Villegas explained that the forum would focus on sharing legislative experiences and discussing public policies related to the environment. The Dominican Republic’s efforts in addressing climate change would also be highlighted and discussed.
