Ex president vows to head protest against Electoral Court

Santo Domingo.- President Hipolito Mejia will head a vigil in front of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) on Friday, called by leaders of one of the two Dominican Republic’s opposition party (PRD) factions.

Suspended PRD organization secretary Geanilda Vasquez said they expect the authorities to respect their right to protest.

She said they demand the replacement of the high court’s members, because in her view, they don’t act with equality and respond to political interests.

Mejia’s presence in the protest could lead to disorder, such as the January 27 clash at PRD headquarters, where a violent mob fired shots and hurled chairs against the supporters of PRD president Miguel Vargas.
