US snowstorm causes flight cancellations in DR

Santo Domingo.– At least 20 flights to snow-battered U.S. East Coast destinations from the Dominican Republic were canceled Friday, stranding thousands of passengers.

The snowstorm, which has claimed nine lives in the United States so far, caused the cancellation of 12 flights to and from New York and Boston at the Las Americas International Airport, Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) reported.

Eight flights, Boston- and New York-bound, were canceled at the International Airport of Cibao, in Santiago, said Aerodom, which operates the country’s air terminals.

Among the companies that canceled flights were Jet Blue Airways and Delta Air Lines. United Airlines was maintaining its scheduled flights to and from Newark Airport, one of the three major airports in and around New York city.
