Holiday period death toll climbs to 47

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Emergency Operations Center (COE) placed the number of deaths attributed to the 2011-2012 holiday period at 47 Dominicans, of which 21 were in traffic accidents from midnight Friday to 8pm Sunday.

It reports 461 injuries, 309 in traffic accidents, 112 for alcohol overdose and 19 for food poisoning during that period.

Meanwhile the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) said it impounded a total of 582 motorcycles.

Of the 1,048 people affected, 47 were deaths, 45 of them in traffic accidents and two for alcohol overdose.

It adds that of the 221 traffic accidents, 108 involved motorcycles, in which 11 people died.
