Presidential Guard agent dies in confusing shootout

SANTO DOMINGO. –A confusing shootout at the corner of Mexico and Galván streets has claimed the life of Saúl Feliz, a member of the Presidential Guard, just as president Leonel Fernandez’s motorcade was headed to the National Palace along Doctor Delgado street, at 10:45 a.m. Monday.

In the incident, the agent was shot once in the head by police agents who, according to reports, were trying to seize a gun from to a retired Army sergeant, who was wounded in the scuffle.

An unidentified officer of the Presidential Guard said the retired sergeant, Julio Cesar Morales, 57, is being treated in the Abreu clinic, in the sector Gazcue.

Another report says Feliz was trying to rob Morales, who allegedly fired in self defense.
