Dominican Republic, Haiti leaders stage ‘harsh exchange’ in Cuba, AFP

Santo Domingo.- The president of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina and of Haiti, Michel Martelly had a "harsh exchange" on Tuesday during a closed-door meeting the Summit of the Community of Central American and Caribbean Countries (CELAC), which concludes in Havana Wednesday, AFP reports citing diplomatic sources.

"The Summit’s only private meeting lasted more than five hours (double the schedule) on disagreements in points of the Declaration, ranging from the fight against poverty to disarmament. There was also a harsh exchange between the Presidents of Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, and of Haiti, Michel Martelly,” AFP report says quoting diplomats."

Some media report that Medina defended Dominican Republic’s sovereignty on questions from Caribbean Community (Caricom) member countries at the Summit.

The Head State reaffirmed that he doesn’t accept accusations of racism, discrimination and violation of human rights against the country.

The countries that share Hispaniola have been at odds over the Dominican Constitutional Court’s recent ruling defining nationality and orders a registry of undocumented foreigners.
