Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s Catholic Bishops Conference (CED) on Thursday warned of the effects from the climate of violence, teen pregnancies, poverty and political malpractice on society.
Speaking to kick off their 32nd annual national gathering, San Francisco diocese bishop Fausto Mejia called for more sensitive authorities who help the poor and distribute wealth fairly.
He said one doesn’t have to be a sociologist to realize that the country is going through "one of its worst moments in history."
The prelate said the Dominican Republic has never before seen such “numerous unfortunate elements” including crimes and femicides, which he blamed on moral decay.
Mejía said the country’s morale began to deteriorate when the family also began to crumble.
Teen pregnancies
As example of “moral decay,” the senior prelate cited the country’s dubious rank with the second highest number of pregnant teens.
"We can therefore say that all these femicides are a scandal which led to a terrorized population."
