Authorities launch probe into deaths of 11 infants

Santo Domingo.- Several National District prosecutors went Tuesday to the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital to investigate the deaths of 11 infants over the weekend, blamed on an oxygen system failure.

The investigators headed homicide Dept. director Dante Castillo and Gender Violence Unit prosecutor Andrea Villa Camacho arrived at the hospital on Lincoln with Independencia avenues of this capital, to determine the real cause of the deaths.

The deaths of the infants some as young as 11 months occurred between Friday and Sunday, and although hospital officials say the infants were in very critical condition, hospital staff who worked during the weekend said the oxygen supply system failed and two of the elevators were damaged, which they affirm made it hard to take the tanks up to the patients’ rooms.
