Santo Domingo.- The American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAMDR) said Wednesday that although the recent violent incidents should be taken into account, they won’t affect the country’s business climate.
Chamber vice president William Malamud said public safety and legal security are fundamental issues in a nation, but noted that thus far there’s no evidence to suggest that the events are related.
The business leader referred to the arson in Santo Domingo’s subway, the attempted jailbreak at Najayo prison in San Cristobal with heavily armed men, and the alleged sabotage of some 14 power line towers in San Cristobal.
The latter sought to take down the country’s power grid, the State-owned Electric Utility (CDEEE) warned Tuesday in a press conference.
“Although the simple events aren’t as worrisome, work must be done to improve public safety for many other reasons," Malamud said.
The National Police meanwhile on Wednesday said thus far seven people have been detained in connection with the attack at Najayo, by four armed men including an M-16 assault rifle, in which five people died on site an one two days later in the hospital.
