Opposition leader to announce controversial meeting today

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic opposition party (PRD) president Miguel Vargas on Monday said he’ll hold a press conference at party headquarters 10am Tuesday, when he’ll announce the time and place for the meeting of the National Executive Committee (CEN), the organization’s top echelon.

The announcement comes just days after his internal rival and former president Hipolito Mejia had warned that he and his supporters will attend the CEN meeting wherever it’s held, despite his condition as an expelled former member.

Vargas’ push to retain the PRD presidency got a major boost on Sunday when Socialist International elected him president of the Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean, and called it is a great honor for his party and for the Dominican people.
