Dominican Republic’s highest honor for Jimmy Carter

Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez Wednesday affirmed that ex US president Jimmy Carter was the great promoter in restoring Latin America’s democracies in the 1980s.

He said Carter’s influence kept the region’s revolutions from becoming dictatorial regimes and democracy instead, in addition to his great contribution to the respect of the dignity, sovereignty and independence of Latin American nations.

“The apostle of Cuba’s independence, Jose Martí, said that to honor is honorable, and indeed, in the Dominican Republic we feel deeply honored today in recognizing an outstanding figure in international scope for being the standard bearer of values and principles that lead to the respect of the dignity of human beings, it’s about president Jimmy Carter,” Fernandez said.

After noting that the 39th US president won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, fernandez bestowed the Order of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella on Carter, the country’s highest honor.
