Finjus urges consensus on Dominican Constitutional Court deadlock

Santo Domingo.- The vice-president of the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) asked president Leonel Fernandez to meet with the leaders of the main political parties to solve the deadlock on the bill for the Constitutional Court’s statutory law.

Servio Tulio Castaños demanded a political consensus to approve the legislative initiative. “That is what I believe is lacking in all this, a meeting of the political class.”

He said the bill for the Constitutional Court’s statutory law requires the vote of the majority of the opposition, and noted that if the political leaders don’t reach an agreement, that law wouldn’t be approved in Congress.

Interviewed Sunday on Santo Domingo TV, Castaños said despite the population defining it as good one year since proclaimed, it hasn’t been possible to implement the provision.

He said dispositions in the constitutional text have been relaxed to such a point that the country must reflect upon them. “It is true that the Constitution is a departure point to the renew the institutions and for those it created to begin functioning.”
