Fifth assault on money-transport vehicles draws criticism

Santo Domingo.- Monday’s assault on a pickup truck carrying valuables including cash is at least the fifth robbery of its kind against the moneychanger Vimenca over the last few years, and the deaths and injuries as the result have been criticized a security expert.

Freddy Sandoval said this type of crime shouldn’t continue, and urged the Armed Forces and National Police to put a halt to the transport of valuables in non-armored vehicles.

He said despite that four people were killed and millions of pesos stolen during a similar assault in plain daylight on the busy Churchill Av. downtown several years, the company continues to transport valuables in normal vehicles.

Often fatal assaults on Vimenca vehicles have occurred in Valverde (northwest), Puerto Plata (north), Fantino (northeast), Guerra (east), and Santo Domingo.
