Senators defend slush fund amid calls to abolish Senate

Santo Domingo.- The senators Rafael Calderon and Heinz Vieluf yesterday defended the use of the Social Fund “the keg,” affirming that the resources are used to help residents in their provinces with urgent and serious problems, such as sickness and death, among other s.

They said if they didn’t have to help with those emergencies, they would have more time to fulfill their Congressional duties.

The lawmakers’ statement comes amid the population’s snowballing rebuke of discretionary use of taxpayers’ money, and growing calls to abolish the Senate to establish an unicameral legislature.
