After major setback, former president wants talks

Santo Domingo.- Former president Hipolito Mejía on Monday said he supports the effort by a group of leaders to mediate with the faction headed by the president of Dominican Republic’s opposition party (PRD), just days after his major setback in his bid to take control of the country’s oldest political organization.

He said he’s open to talks and harmony with PRD president Miguel Vargas, for the “sake of unity” and proof of that, he said, is the fact he attended a meeting called by a group of leaders in the house of the former Vice President and senior party leader Milagros Ortiz.

Mejia said he’s willing to talk to end the PRD’s crisis. "The first who’s been open to all possible arrangements has been me, I’ve spent two years trying to get out of this conflict."

The former president spoke after the end of the meeting also attended by senior leaders Guido Gomez, Eligio Jaques and Tony Peña, and others who seek a solution to the two year standoff.
