Cold front brings rain and alerts to Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) has reported the movement of the cold front or frontal system #7 across the country during the current frontal season. As a result, precipitation is expected over the next 36 hours, prompting the issuance of meteorological alerts and warnings in various provinces. The alerts are in response to the potential risk of flooding in rivers, streams, ravines, and urban areas.

During the morning hours of this Wednesday, the weather is anticipated to be predominantly cloudy, with moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by gusts of wind and potential thunderstorms.

Provinces such as Monte Cristi, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, Hermanas Mirabal, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte, Samaná, Sánchez Ramírez, La Vega, and Monsignor Nouel are expected to be affected. The impact will extend in the afternoon to San José de Ocoa, Azua, San Juan, Barahona, Pedernales, Peravia, San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, Greater Santo Domingo, the National District, San Pedro de Macorís, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, and La Altagracia. Although the early nighttime hours may still witness these activities affecting the southeastern area, the trend is expected to improve as the cold front moves away.

Looking ahead to Thursday, the entry of dry air, generated by the anticyclone, is projected to limit rainfall across the country. The previous cold front will position itself east of Puerto Rico. The meteorological condition will be influenced by the presence of a weak trough southwest of the island in the Caribbean Sea. However, the forecast only predicts isolated and passing rains in scattered places in Barahona and Pedernales.

Regarding the wind, the forecast indicates a brisk northern component with strong gusts in various locations, including the northern coastal area, Northern Cordillera, Cibao valley, Central Cordillera, among others throughout the country.
