Santo Domingo.- In his 2024 accountability report, President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic shared optimistic data regarding the sustained growth and advancement of the country’s tourism sector, solidifying its position as a global leader.
In the year 2023, the Dominican Republic joyfully welcomed over 10 million visitors, precisely reaching 10,306,517 tourists. This accomplishment serves as a significant milestone for the nation and underscores its ongoing dedication to providing excellent tourism experiences.
President Abinader noted, “In acknowledgment of our endeavors, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized us in 2021 as the top country in the global recovery of tourism. Building on this remarkable standing, President Abinader conveyed that the UNWTO forecasts the recovery of international tourism to pre-pandemic levels by 2024, a feat achieved two years ahead of the Dominican Republic.”
“The latest UNWTO report highlights that, in 2023, we will lead alongside Saudi Arabia and Albania in the growth of post-pandemic tourism. This international acknowledgment validates the positive impact of the policies implemented in our country to rejuvenate the tourism industry,” he affirmed.
Looking ahead, President Abinader unveiled plans for the construction of 19 new hotel investment projects over the next three years, providing an additional 9,135 rooms with an estimated investment of US$2,936 million. These projects are expected to significantly enhance tourism infrastructure and elevate the overall visitor experience.
Additionally, the President emphasized the ongoing public investment strategy in key tourist areas and new centers across the nation. With an investment of 8.4 billion, 89 projects have been intervened in 18 provinces, and 39 projects are currently underway, with a particular focus on critical provinces such as Samaná, Puerto Plata, and La Altagracia.
Among the noteworthy projects are the reconstruction of the Fishermen’s Plaza, enhancements to beach access at locations like Astillero and Cosón, the revitalization of the Malecón in Samaná, and the initial phase of the recovery of Playa Sosúa in Puerto Plata. Additionally, projects like the reconstruction of the La Caleta underwater park, the construction of access to the Aguas Blancas Falls in Constanza, and the transformation of the surroundings of the Boca de Cachón spa in the Independencia province were highlighted.
The Dominican Republic stands firmly as a premier tourist destination, thanks to the strategic vision and effective implementation of measures to promote the sustainable development of its tourism industry.
